 MANAGING TRANSITION: ORGANIZATIONAL CHANGE AND DEVELOPMENT

 Answer all the questions. 


1. A new owner has just taken over a small walk-in-and-buy-the-slice pizza shop in your town. There are presently ten employees, four of whom are full-time and the remaining six are part-time. The pizza shop is open seven days a week from 10.00 a.m. to midnight. The new owner believes there is a market niche available for late-night pizza and would like to stay open each night until 4 a.m. He wants to implement the change as soon as possible. Prepare your own force-field analysis indicative of this change. How is it possible to overcome the forces for the status quo? How will you make sure to “refreeze” following the change/s? Summarize your analysis in an action plan. (10) 


2. Due to an intense competition from recently joined competitors, Alpha Inc. has decided to initiate change process. How can management utilize the set of internal as well as external factors of change that can force Alpha Inc. to successfully achieve the desired state? (10) 


3. The senior management of the organization in which you are working as an HR manager, is planning to restructure the organization. You have been entrusted with the responsibility to initiate the change process. Explain how you would implement Burke-Litwin’s model of change in this context. How would it be different in your strategic approach if you were to implement Galpin’s model of change management process, in the same context? Explain your answer. (5+5) 


4. Vista Telecommunications is planning to introduce a new customer service program that will affect all of its 300 sales and service employees. Job duties will change and the employee reward system will be altered to fit the new customer focus. Moreover, the organization wants to improvize the efficiency of work processes, thereby removing some of the comfortable (and often leisurely) routines that employees have been following over the past years. MBA/Even (2021-2022)/Reg 2 (a).Identify and describe the types of forces( along with their psychological reasons) resisting change that the company will potentially experience during this change process. (b). Discuss the strategies that may be implemented to reduce the employee resistance to this change.(5+5) 


5. Tech Tree Inc., is a manufacturer of AC circuit boards. Senior management wants to introduce valueadded management practices to reduce production costs and remain competitive in the prevailing market. A consultant has recommended that the company start with a pilot project in one department. When the pilot project succeeds, the company can diffuse these practices to other areas of the organization. Justify the merits of this recommendation. Also identify the precipitating conditions that would make this diffusion of the change effort more successful in the context of the ‘step-focused approach’ of organizational change as given by Schaffer & Thomson. (3+7) 


6. Imagine that you are an HR manager whose unit is encountering problems on account of lack of coordination between the employees. The purpose of OD is to create a healthy workplace where individual differences are managed as a part of the change initiative. Which particular set of OD techniques would you use here in the present situation and why? How and why would OD differ if the elements of an organization’s system were not interdependent?
